Philippe Chitarrini - De la peinture avant toute chose

I could use my paintings to depict landscapes, objects or people, or give free rein to my imagination to offer an interpretation of my latest dreams or those I might have. But that is not the case. I have eliminated all forms of representation from my work.

I paint paintings that present painting itself, pictorial propositions. Others have done this before me, of course, but I strive to do so with my own means, taking into account the main components of painting in order to question it.
Among these components, space, or more precisely the use of space, remains my most important concern.
When Roland Botrel wrote a text about my work in 2017, he had already understood this very well:
“It is no longer like before, the shock of a single-colour painting hanging on a wall, but the consideration of the wall transformed by the touch of colour… What am I saying about the wall! The entire place!!! “
A little further on, he concluded:
“There is still a desire to build, to break out of the frame, to invade the space. “

To sum up, I am less interested in shapes and light than in space. Shapes, like light, are merely a pretext for allowing pictorial space to appear as such and extend beyond the limits of the painting. I seek pure painting, which does not require the viewer to immerse themselves in contemplation, but rather to enter into its dynamic. The viewer must constantly move around the space surrounding my canvases in order to perceive their subtleties and project their extension into the space that receives them.
